Zusammenfassung

Objective. An evaluation is made of the diagnostic efficacy of the clinical and complementary techniques used to diagnose medical-surgical pathology of the salivary glands. Design. A retrospective study of 436 cases of medical-surgical pathology of the salivary glands spanning the period 1985-1997 was conducted, comparing the histopathological and microbiological findings with the diagnostic reports involving the most commonly used complementary tests (simple X-rays, sialography, echography, computed axial tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and fine-needle aspiration). Results and conclusions. The tentative clinical diagnosis exhibited a sensitivity and specificity of over 0.80 in discriminating between benign and malignant processes, though exactness in typification was low. Echography should replace sialography in patients with inflammatory and obstructive disorders of the salivary glands. Computed axial tomography and magnetic resonance imaging afford no advantages over the other explorations, and should be reserved for staging purposes, the determination of possible involvement of the deep parotid lobe, and for assessing tumor relations to adjacent structures.
