A 9.4 m thick spatter deposit including decimetre-scale densely welded spatter layers crops out on the SE hillside of the Cerro Gordo scoria cone (Campo de Calatrava Volcanic Field). These layers exhibit an apparently coherent texture (i.e., not clastic) with lava flow appearance and are constituted by alkaline (Na2O+K2O = 3.63–5.97%), ultrabasic (SiO2 = 37.61–41.57%), and essentially vitreous rocks. Structural evidences of spatter flow over land are absent. The densely welded spatter layers are regarded as generated by the rapid accumulation and in situ coalescence of lava splashes emitted from a fire fountain.
