Abstract

Igneous and metamorphic zircons from the Lys-Caillaouas pluton have been identified according to their petrographic and geochemical characteristics. The igneous zircons constraint an age of 300 ± 2 Ma for the emplacement of the pluton. By contrast, the metamorphic zircons yield a slightly older age of 307 ± 3 Ma, which probably dates the thermal peak of HT/LP Variscan metamorphism. Therefore, a short time lag of ca. 7 m.y. emerges between the Variscan metamorphic climax and the synkinematic (late-Carboniferous) pluton emplacement in the Axial Zone of the Pyrenees.
