Zusammenfassung

As part of the Spanish Empire, the Basque Country played an important role in the process of globalization during the eighteenth century. A vast amount of documentation allows us to weave together the network of people and economic interests involved in the main international trade and financial networks emanating from ports in the Basque Country. These networks can be divided into three levels. First, there were regional networks linking the coast with nearby territories. Second, the Basque Country developed networks with prestigious French, English, Dutch, German and Flemish trading companies. Third, there was an international trade and financial network which the Basques linked into through Bayonne and Cádiz.
