Résumé

When the outbreak of the Great War occurs, in 1914, the cinema only has twenty years of history, although by this time has already developed its major industrial, productive and narrative resources, and has educated the gaze of a public massively consuming their products. It is also the subject of theorizing about its artistic status, which will prepare the fruitful dialogue with other artistic practices developed in the interwar period. But despite the Great War not attracted the attention of producers and directors, cinema itself was the subject of attention from other actors, especially political and military who saw in it a powerful means of propaganda and mobilization public opinion. Likewise, contributed to the popularization of rich imagery to which films of later decades will set and use as spectacle. This paper analyzes the relationship between cinema and war theme, also taking into account the conditions of production and reception that have characterized the cinematic telling of the story
