Abstract

The present article aims to identify the Latin reference works or "enciclopedie rinascimentali" quoted in the ascetic work "Gero" (Bordeaux, 1643) by Basque writer Pedro de Aguerre "Axular", and seeks to analyse their possible use as sources for the "inventio", paying particular attention to the quotations, references and "exempla". The article analyses the references of four works quoted in "Gero", but it concludes that Axular most probably used only one of them as a first-hand reference work, namely Theodor Zwinger's "Teatrum humanae vitae" (1565). Finally, the article identifies another work from which Axular took several quotations and references and translated whole passages, basically "exempla" _ this is Juan de Torre's "Filosofia moral de príncipes" (Burgos, 1596)
