Abstract

Disease related malnutrition is highly prevalent in European Hospitals, and frequently, not properly diagnosed and treated. Besides that, its detection and treatment has demonstrated to be cost-effective. The most important political and scientific organizations in Europe advise to decrease the impact of this illness. However this recommendations and guidelines have no reflect in local health policy in Extremadura. Starting from that, different studies in real clinical practice conditions were developed in a hospital of Extremadura. Between the results, those which highlighted the most are the following: almost absent recognition of disease related malnutrition; economical losses of 16,8% of total economic budget due to nutritional inefficiency and reduction in length of hospitalization stay in those patients with early specialized nutritional support.
