Zusammenfassung

This thesis is the result of an empirical study. Our aim was to find how Portuguese sixteenth- and eighteen-century music is currently used in specialized higher-education Aural classes. Our research took place in higher-education schools. A retrospective analysis and an inquiry to students and teachers were done. Our sample included all Potuguese public and private schools. We observed adjustments made to the official Aural program in force since 1971, focusing in public schools music teaching. Beyond this core study, we developed a complementary work that highlights the quality of Portuguese polyphonic music of this period, particularly that produced in the Chapel of Vila Viçosa by composer António Pinheiro. The analysis of António Pinheiros psalms is divide in three parts: the first focuses the structure of psalms, the second is devoted to editions, the third presents an analytical/interpretative analysis of the pieces. To contextualize the main issue of our study, we reflected about Aurals current importance in the field of music teaching. We considered the period from 1835 ti the present. Secular music education in Portugal began in 1835 with the creation of Conservatório de Música, which strongly contributed to the assimilation and development of musical culture outside the clerical level. The presentation of an analytical and interpretive proposal on the psalms of António Pinheiro aims to provide essential elements for the understanding of this periods music, which may be taken into account by performers and teachers.
